Good Avocado Knows Green

August 13, 2008 by · 1 Comment

There are many web hosts to choose from out there. Unfortunately, not all of them are reliable or eco-friendly. GoodAvocado is one the few hosts that is not only reliable but is also very friendly towards the environment. As a matter of fact, we think it’s a company run by a small group of super hippies, but that’s just personal opinion.

Good Advocado

Just by taking a look at their website you can already feel their friendliness towards the environment. Even the colors reflect their passion towards nature and the environment. The first time I saw their website I thought it was some sort of national park. When I saw 1000GB of bandwidth the first thing that popped into my head was “Wow, the price is going to be at least in the two digits.” And for a guy who merely wanted to host a personal site and on a tight budget this was not good. As the page loaded after clicking “learn more” I was relieved and excited to find out it was only going to cost me less than 5 bucks (4.99)! Most of the previous hosts I saw normally had set a cap on the amount of websites you could host at that price, but not GoodAvocado. They allow you to host unlimited websites and that’s not all that’s unlimited: MySQL databases as well as mailboxes are unlimited too. They also included an automatic software installer that had some useful scripts to compliment my personal site. However at the time I didn’t think I’d be using it..

Anyway, before I placed the order I decided to see if this eco stuff was just a mere sales pitch as I was already intrigued by their generous hosting features. I found out that they used 100% carbon-neutral operations, used both solar and wind power, had tree-planting initiatives, and supported non-profit organizations. So those 5 bucks I’d be paying would not only be paying the hosting fee but also part of it would go to non-profit organizations. So in a way I’d be helping out non-profits and be hosting my personal site! How sweet is that?

Overall, I’ve been using their service for a couple of months now and have had no problems. I definitely recommend this host as not only is it reliable, but it’s extremely eco-friendly as well. How many other hosts donate part of their monthly earnings to non-profits? Exactly.

Head over to Good Avocado for some awesome green savings on your new hosting plan!

5 Great Green Clothing Stores

August 12, 2008 by · 5 Comments

So, you’re in the mood to feel a little green, and you’re not sure where to start? Let me ask you this – do you like shopping for new clothes?

Chances are (especially you chicks) you said yes, and if that’s the case, I have a great list of five awesome stores that sell even awesome-er (yeah, new word) green and environmentally friendly clothes! You don’t have to get all neo hippy to go green, and better yet, with some of the trendy fashions that the following stores sell, you can look pretty darn good while you’re at it.

White Apricot

1. WhiteApricot.com – This fabulous web outlet is definitely what they claim “a go-to place for the latest trends, news, and information on eco fashion”. Not only are they one of the trend setters in fashion, but they also update you on the latest hot news about organic skin care and other natural products. While not a direct manufacturer, WhiteApricot.com is more of a mega green information portal that will always have the latest deals and not to mention – sales. With their highly qualified staff spending their days picking up on all the good stuff, this is definitely a site to bookmark if you’re getting into eco-fashion.

Green Collective

2. GreenCollective.com – Now a little something for the guys. GreenCollective.com carries an awesome line of stylish and contemporary green organic clothes. Using low impact dyes, or even vegetable based dyes, is just one little green part of the business. These guys really know how to design a product, and most of the clothing I looked through was very buyable. Prices weren’t a bargain, but more on the “fair” side. No one said going green was going to be cheap. But you know when you buy a piece of organic cotton clothing, you’re doing your small part to make this world a better place. (*cue Michael Jackson)

Happy Hippie

3. HappyHippie.com – We couldn’t pass up one of the hottest hippie outlets on the interwebs! The Happy Hippie store specializes in Handmade Hippie Clothing, Hemp Clothing, Organic Handmade Clothing, and Hippie Patchwork Clothing. If you’ve every even had the smallest inkling of being a hippie, this is the place you need to check out quick, because they also have a Hippie 101 section, which touches on current social and environmental issues that you, as a hippie (or hippie wannabe) need to be aware of. One of the coolest aspects of the site (besides the great clothes) was the “barter board”, where hippies from all over can trade their stuff….for other stuff. Radical, dude.

Rapanui Clothing

4. RapanuiClothing.com – So if you’re the surfer type, or if you’re just into dressing like one (poser!), then you’ve gotta check out Rapanui Clothing. Not only do they have the coolest name in the green clothing business, but they have a website jam packed with awesome green surfer and just plain awesome wear. Not only does Rapanui sell green clothing, but they go way further than that. They give the entire breakdown of everything for each article of clothing, from how it’s made to where it’s made, and with what kind of materials (double organic, bamboo, etc…). To top it off, this totally awesome green company donates 5% of profits to environmental charities. Now that’s going green if I’ve ever heard of it. Surf’s up, bro.

Green Closet

5. MyGreenCloset.com – Last, but certainly not least is a site we found that caters to the kids – because really, it’s all about the kids. Teach your little one to be a green hand early on in life by dressing them in the coolest, yet environmentally friendly green organic clothing. I only wish they had this kind of stuff when I was a kid, but now I can make up for my simple childhood by hooking my kid up with 100% certified organic cotton clothing from MyGreenCloset.com. If you’re on a budget, make sure you check out the “Discount Duds” section for some sweet savings. Do it for the kids!

Hope you’ve enjoyed our selection of green outfitters. They all look like wonderful companies, with a broad range of styles for everyone – even the kids. I guess on the next search we’ll have to find green doggy clothing (yes, it’s out there).

The Hydrogen Fuel Alternative

August 12, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Five years ago, President Bush, in his State of the Union speech, announced a $1.2 billion dollar hydrogen fuel initiative in order to help reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil. This was a huge deal then, because gasoline didn’t cost near what it does today, and the announcement also stressed the reduction of greenhouse gases and other pollutants from vehicles, homes, and businesses.

Suzuki Hydrogen
Manufacturers quickly jumped on board, and started producing hybrid vehicles that ran on hydrogen fuel and batteries. Since powering vehicles with hydrogen has multiple advantages, plenty of funding has flooded the scientific and engineering communities in an attempt to reduce costs to build and maintain hydrogen powered vehicles. Fuel cells, which are required to store hydrogen, are becoming smaller and more technologically advanced as engineers streamline the process. Hydrogen fuel continues to be something that will help combat $4.00/gallon gasoline, and gives countries across the globe hope in reducing costs and more importantly, dirty pollution, which plagues many major cities.

Hydrogen can be found in many places, and is available in water, coal, natural gas, and biomass. The DOE (Department Of Energy) states that hydrogen can reduce America’s oil import demands by over 11+ million barrels per day, which is about how much we purchase per day currently. They say this can happen by the year 2040 – so it’s a ways off, but with the exponential growth of technology, that number could possibly be reduced as we move into the future.

Vehicle pollution is a wildly growing problem in large and medium sized cities all over the United States, and the entire world. Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity as opposed to gas to power an automobile, so this can significantly help reduce and eventually eliminate vehicle pollution since hydrogen emits only water vapor.     The DOE says that by the year 2040, by using hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, we could eliminate greenhouse carbon gases by over 500 million metric tons per year. I bet the planet Earth would be okay with that!

When hydrogen is burned to power and engine and generate electricity, the high efficiency ratio of hydrogen as a power source drastically reduces the nasty compounds that take a toll on our environment. So hydrogen powered vehicles, and anything else that requires electricity, can help us greatly to finally achieve a healthy, clean, and clear environment for us, and more importantly, our kids, their kids, and so on…

So the next time your at a dealership that sells hydrogen fuel cell cars, take pride in knowing that if you get one, you’re one of the special people taking action to literally help make this world a better place to live in.

A Green Hosting Dream

August 12, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

DreamHost.com, one of the most well known web hosting companies on the planet, are still to this day offering great services in return for very little money. For instance, DreamHost can provide 500GB of free space and 5TB of bandwidth along with many other killer benefits such as unlimited databases, emails, ftp accounts and support for a multitude of other products for as low as $6/month.

Dream Host

Most importantly, the first stage DreamHost.com took to go green was calculating the total amount of what they were wasting, and after they had finished calculating all the waste, they came up with t a total equivalent to 545 average sized homes. After they had the total of waste figures, they started thinking about how they could significantly reduce it, and they came up with some pretty easy and fundamental solutions:

1. Massive recycling from employees (cans, paper, scraps, computer parts, etc…)

2. Turning lights off whenever they can.

3. Using paper that was only used on one side.

4. Reduce vehicle usage.

5. To save even more energy, DreamHost has invested in “Emission Reduction Credits” that are selling non electricity emissions.

DreamHost really want to make a concerted effort to save energy and do all they can for the “green” cause, even if it means investing money to buy special credits for saving electricity. More web host companies should go green like DreamHost did, and they showed us it is possible to run a business while saving electricity and the environment at the same time. Can you imagine how much electricity and waste would be saved if all the major web hosting companies made a genuine effort to “go green”? It would be almost unbelievable.

At the DreamHost web site, you can find a page that is shows they are a green company, and even have an updated Certificate of Carbon Neutralization. DreamHost is one of the first companies that use green products to save energy and the environment – even if the costs are higher. They realize that saving the environment isn’t always cheap, but well worth it in the long run, especially for customers that truly appreciate the efforts of such a large company. I am sure they will continue to save electricity and keep their green status, and I hope more and more companies will follow DreamHost’s environmentally friendly example.

So what more can you ask for:

1. Great hosting and related services, at crazy low prices.

2. Massive effort to go green in a time we really need it.

If you’re considering buying hosting anytime soon, then DreamHost.com should definitely be on your list. They even offer a free domain with most hosting plans, so you have no excuse!

Cheers to DreamHost for being a fantastically green company.

Additionally, if you enter the code “greenerbuyer” when signing up for hosting at Dreamhost, you’ll receive MASSIVE discounts, and TWO free domain names, not one, but TWO!
